There are many important things to look into when searching for that perfect laptop. Screen size, processor power, memory, etc. However, one often overlooked factor is the computer’s battery.

Purchasing the wrong laptop can lead to short battery life. This happens for one of two reasons. The first reason is that the manufacturer might use a poorly designed battery with their notebooks.

Another reason that causes quick power drainage is that companies often use components that drain the battery very rapidly. If you’re not careful, you could spend over $1000 on a notebook that will die after an hour of battery use.

Lenovo considered both of these factors when designing the ThinkPad. They use components (processors, etc.) that use minimum power. They also use high quality batteries. A Lenovo ThinkPad’s battery life ranges from about 3 hours, all the way up to 10 hours for the upper end batteries! Now there is no need to fear loosing power to your notebook when you need it the most.

Technology is a field in which rapid advancement is constantly being achieved. The development and implementation of wireless has been a huge technological leap making life easier for gamers, networkers, and professionals alike.

Most laptops today come with a built in built in 802.11a, b, or g connections. In other words, they have built in Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) and can connect to the internet or another network without requiring a physical connection.

Of course, as with any technology, Wi-Fi will eventually be outdated. The question is what will be next? It has been come to be known as WiMAX. It’s technical term is 802.16. Often times it it also referred to as a WirelessMAN or Wireless Metropolitan Area Network.

In a nut shell, it’s nicknames say exactly what it is. It is another type of wireless network that brings several new advantages. For example, a typical Wi-Fi 802.11 connection has an indoor range that averages around a little over 100 feet. WiMAX is capable of a much higher range, up to 50km. WiMAX is can also produce a very high bit rate. It can transfer at speeds up to 70 Mbit/s. However, when using such a high bit rate, the range of WiMAX has to be limited to avoid errors.

In other words, 802.16 can transfer data very very fast, or span over a very large range, even over a whole city.

As I walked through the doors and looked to the left, I noticed a man with a laptop. I was pretty impressed with the fact that it looked extremely portable.

Upon closer examination, I realized that it was a ThinkPad! A R Series to be exact. It sported a 14.1 inch widescreen. I was so impressed with it that I did a little research. It turns out that the R Series is available also with the standard 15.4″ display. A nice size as well, I was left more impressed by the smaller model, which consequently costs a little bit more.

The 14.1″ model is extremely durable and powerful. I was surprised as well the learn that it is available with up to a 2.60GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. It is a very affordable notebook as well landing in around the $600 price range. I’m not familiar with any other notebooks that have these unique features at such a reasonable price. It’s a tiny, yet awesome notebook!

A big problem that I have with laptops today is that the battery usually dies out too fast. I have used laptops that can’t play a whole DVD without completely draining the battery. Even though it’s a lap top, if there’s not an electrical outlet around, then you might not get all the work done you want, or be able to continue with your movie or other tasks for very long.

This is one area that many computer companies fail in, but in which Lenovo has excelled. The battery life of a ThinkPad is generally considerably longer than that of a notebook from another company. Battery live in Lenovos depending on the model can last from 3 hours up to more than 7 hours!

I’m not sure why other companies aren’t trying to excel in efficiency as well. Since battery life is one of the most important factors for me in a notebook, I really like Lenovo.

It’s the #2 ultra-portable laptop according to PC Worlds Top Ten Ultra-Portable Laptops and rightfully so. The screen rotates 180 degrees and can be flipped down to create a super compact working area.

This amount of flexibility makes it easy to use on an airplane or in a class room. It can be rested on your lap and easily used to take notes using its touchscreen and the digitizer pen. A lot of people like it’s ability to easily correct mistakes by erasing them using the opposite end of digitizer pen. It functions just like the eraser of a real pencil.

These interesting features make it a highly desirable notebook for people searching easy mobility and note-taking. It’s great for people that can’t type notes very fast in classroom or conference settings.

Windows Vista has been out for a while now and I think it’s great. However, it has it’s disadvantages. For example, it takes almost a GB of RAM to run it! Most computer companies are cramming Vista down everyone’s throat. Although I like it, I would still like to be able to go buy a new notebook with Windows XP.

That’s one thing I really like about Lenovo now. You can still choose which operating system you want preloaded on your computer. For organization and media, I use Windows Vista. But for other specific tasks, I still prefer and couldn’t live without XP.

Though I prefer Lenovo for various reasons, the flexibility of choosing from a wider variety of operating systems is one one the biggest. Lenovo is one of the few companies still making Windows XP available.
